Welcome to the international (English-speaking) blog of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. Our blog invites views on research, education, student life, and other societal themes connected to our computer science fields. The intention is to build a forum as an open window for readers from inside and outside computer science. Autumn School on Computational Creativity
by Oskar Gross
Autumn school on Computational Creativity was held in Porvoo from 7th till 11th of November. It is interesting to note that it was a landmark in the field of computational creativity, as it was apparently the first "school" dedicated on this topic. Moreover, the lectures were given by the leading researchers in the respective field.
The topics in the autumn school varied greatly. In addition to practical applications, also the philosphical aspect of computational creativity was a popular topic during discussion sessions. In the following, let's have a quick look on the topics.
The automated visual arts were covered by Simon Colton and Paulo Urbano. Simon Colton presented his work on The Painting Fool, which in some ways can already be called an artist in its own right. Paulo Urbano held a tutorial on swarm paintings using Netlogo.
Tony Veale introduced how to find metaphores and relations between concepts. He showed how to take advantage of language structures to reliably find relations between concepts.
A very comprehensive overview of computational music generation was covered by Geraint A. Wiggins. The lectures did not cover just the practical approach, but also the human perception and philosophy behind music.
Humor detection and generation topics were covered by Graeme Richie and Carlo Strapparava. Combined together, these lectures gave a very comprehensive insight into the field, both the history and the state of art.
In addition to the interesting presentations, the participants had a chance to see the amazingly beautiful old town of Porvoo and later drink hot glögg in a cozy tavern. The whole event was made complete by having sauna during the last evening, which in addition to relaxing properties lead to interesting discussions on computational creativity.
