General information: Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki
The Helsinki University Computer Science Department carries out basic and advanced research in computer science, and offers advanced teaching based on that research. Teaching and research at the department is carried out in established sub-programmes, comprising (1) algorithms and machine learning, (2) distributed systems and data communications, and (3) software systems. In addition, the department offers two international Master's programmes: (1) Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics (MBI) and (2) Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University Master's Degree Programme in Information and Communications Technology (CBU-ICT).
The most part of the post-graduate education at the department is given in the graduate schools HeCSE, FiCS, FIGS and SoSE. The Finnish Academy Centre of Excellence, Algorithmic Data Analysis 2008-2013, and the Helsinki Institute for Information technology, HIIT, a research collaboration between the University of Helsinki and Aalto University, operate at the department. In 2011, a total of 140 person-years were completed at the department, resulting in 22,883 credits, 66 Master's degrees and 3 PhD degrees, and the department's funding totalled MEUR 10,4 (including external funding MEU 4,1).
General information: HIIT
Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT is a joint research institute of Aalto University and the University of Helsinki for basic and applied research on information technology. Its research ranges from fundamental methods and technologies to novel applications and their impact on people and society. HIIT’s key competences are in Internet architecture and technologies, mobile and human-centric computing, user-created media, analysis of large sets of data and probabilistic modeling of complex phenomena. HIIT works in a multidisciplinary way, with scientists from computer, natural, behavioral and social sciences, as well as from humanities and design. The projects are conducted in collaboration with universities, companies and research institutions.
In 2009, a total of 174 person-years were completed at HIIT. The funding of HIIT totaled MEUR 9 (including external funding over MEUR 6). There were 250 publications.
