Activities

The alumni activities at the Department of Computer Science started in autumn 2008. A group of former students organised into an alumni association, and at the same time, the department started to organise alumni activities in cooperation with the association. The association's main channel for electronic information and discussions is the LinkedIn group TKT-alumni. The department has preliminary plans to organise one alumni event each year as well as electronic information about current affairs.

If you want to join the department's alumni activities, you can join the Helsinki University free alumni campus, where a separate group for computer science alumni has been established. The department does not keep its own register over alumni, but maintains contact with its alumni through this network and the alumni association. To join the alumni campus and the department's own group, please go to http://www.helsinki.fi/alumni/

Goals

The purpose of the alumni activities is to support the cooperation between alumni, instructors, students and researchers for the benefit of all parties as well as society at large. All former students of the Department of Computer Science are its alumni.

For the alumni, the activities offer a chance to meet old fellow students and instructors, to network, for teaching and research collaborations, impacting the work of the department, recruit new graduates from the department, and access to current information about the department and the university.

The department hopes to gain the alumni's expert opinions on developing its teaching, degrees and research. Alumni can participate in the supervision of theses, give guest lectures, and speak at events on working life. The department also hopes to affect society at large through its alumni, e.g. by relaying research- and science-based views about the ICT field, and by improving the visibility and appreciation of the field and the department. The goal for improving the contact between students and working life, we hope to organise initial trainee positions for students and to establish a grant trust funded by alumni.
