NFS slowness continues on Linux hosts using AD home directories

Description:

The arrival of new students exposed a bug in the NFS file server used by the University's IT Services department for serving AD home directories. Large directories (more than 100 files / directory) get extremely slow. Just removing a single file might take minutes. This also makes emptying of the large directory quite challenging.  The larger the directory, the slower it gets. This problem is particularly evident if Netbeans and TMC are installed in the AD home directory, which many new students had been instructed to do.

EMC's (EMC is the manufacturer of the NFS server) engineers are currently working on the problem, but there is no ETA for the fix, since the cause of the problem is still not known. Apparently there are very high loads on the server during the day when the situation is worst.

Meanwhile CS Department's users can use their CS home directory by using username of the form user@cs in the login screen.
