Problems with Linux hosts using AD NFS home directories

Description:

update2: It is now possible to login with CS Department's home directory. Just use user account of form user@cs when logging in.

update: The NFS file server administrators know about the bug and it has been delegated to the NFS file server manufacturer. Some tweaking have been made, so the problem might not be as bad as it was last week, but it still exists.

The arrival of new students has exposed a bug in the NFS file server used for AD home directories. It seems that large directories (more than 100 files / directory) get extremely slow. Just removing a single file might take minutes. This also makes emptying of the large directory quite challenging.  The larger the directory, the slower it gets: looks like the implementor of the NFS file server has not heard about indexed data structures. This problem is particularly evident if Netbeans and TMC are installed in the AD home directory, which many new students had been instructed to do.

It is not known when this will be fixed, or if this even can be fixed. Until then, you should avoin using large directories in AD homed Linux hosts.
