Tips for printing
- Only print what you need, on both sides and/or many pages on one paper.
- With the Ghostview program (gv in Linux), you can choose which pages to print from the postscript file.
-
We use CUPS as the printing system. In Linux its options can be given straight to the lpr command. To print, for instance, two pages on one sheet, two-sided, on printer cs-b221: lpr -o number-up=2 -o sides=two-sided-long-edge -Pcs-b221 document.ps . The CUPS documentation has more information about command-line options.
- Do not print large black-and-white jobs on a colour printer, because they are more expensive to use. You can print coloured files on a black-and-white printer, if the colours are not necessary.
- Preview the document you are about to print.
- Do not use the printer for previews; instead, use the preview feature of the program you are using. To check the final format of your document print it into a Postscript file and use Ghostview to view the output.
- If you are printing but something goes wrong, please remove your job from the printer queue.
- In Linux, you can remove your job with the command lprm. For example, to remove all your own jobs from the printer queue to cs-b221 use the command lprm –Pcs-b221 - .
- In Windows, remove your job by clicking the following: Start -> Settings -> Printers. Double click the correct printer. Choose the job(s) to remove. Document -> Cancel.
- You can cancel your job at the last minute with the ‘cancel job’ button on the printer (not available on all printers).
- Fetch your documents.
- Always pick up your job from the printer. Put the cover paper in the recycling bin. Arrange jobs that have not been picked up close to the printer on a table or shelf, in overlapping layers so that the username on each cover paper is visible.
