Brain-based Programming: A New Concept for Computer Science Education

Event type:
Guest lecture
Event time:
12.09.2013 - 11:00 - 12:00
Lecturer :
Dr Barbara Sabitzer
Place:
Room K232, Minerva Plaza Siltavuorenpenger 5A, University of Helsinki
Description:

The lecture introduces a new teaching concept that was developed based
on neurodidactical principles in order to improve the learning
outcomes of an introductory programming course at the University of
Klagenfurt (Austria). The concept was nominated for the Ars Docendi
Award, the Austrian national award for excellent teaching at
universities and the evaluation results of the pilot project were
satisfying. They show an overall improvement for the students as well
as an above-average evaluation of the course. This supports the
hypothesis that learning is more effective when the functioning of
brain and memory is considered. How this can be done is presented in
the talk. There will also be an overview of the concept and the
neurodidactical principles behind it, the integrated "brain-based"
teaching methods and exercises as well as the evaluation results of
the pilot project.
