AD account migration

The IT Services at the University of Helsinki (formerly the IT Department) is going to start using only one computer network and the Novell network accounts will be discontinued (including touko accounts). The migration to the new AD user accounts will affect CS department staff and students, but not as extensively as you would think from the emails sent by the Helpdesk.

The university’s shared systems are used with your so-called main user account. These systems include SoleTM, Alma, WebOodi, the wireless network HUPnet, software distribution, and webmail.helsinki.fi.

Most CS Dept. users have a unix account, i.e. a cc account, as their main user account now. In the future, only an AD account can be your main user account. This is why we also need to activate our AD accounts on the IT Services activation page at http://www.helsinki.fi/atk/adlupa

An AD account has been created automatically in spring 2010 for anyone who did not have one before. You need to activate the account even if you are already using an AD account. The above-mentioned activation page will tell you if your account has already been activated. Everyone who receives this message should activate their AD account on the above-mentioned page by the end of year 2010.

With the same AD account, you can access the lab computers maintained by the IT Services around the university.

The move to AD accounts does not affect your use of computers serviced by the CS Department. This means that you can access your own computer as before even after the 1 Dec 2010 and you do not need to move your files.

In future, the validity of your CS Dept. account will depend on the validity of your AD account. The cc account has been used for this up till now, but if you do not have any use for the unix computers of the IT Services, you can let that account die in peace. Their unix remote-access servers include kruuna, myntti, vesuri and ruuvi.helsinki.fi.
