Awards at Christmas coffee

The Department of Computer Science had its Christmas coffee gathering on 17 Dec 2010. It has become our tradition to reward people who have worked at the department during the past year with the following honours:

  • Positive personality
  • Good teacher
  • Good researcher

The following were awarded the honourable titles .

Awardees: Valentin Polishchuk, Jaakko Kurhila, Mikko Pervilä and Pirjo Moen. Antti Laaksonen is missing from the photo.

University Lecturer Jaakko Kurhila

has been awarded the title Positive personality 2010 by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. The grounds for rewarding him include the following:

By his example, Jaakko has created a new atmosphere of positivity and support at the department. He knows how to find the strengths of staff and students and spurs them on with his skilfull mentoring. Jaakko keeps up an active dialogue with both students and teachers. Even in the most difficult situations, he can find his way to a good solution.

Instructor Antti Laaksonen

has been awarded the title Good teacher 2010 for junior teachers at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. The grounds for rewarding him include the following:

Antti Laaksonen has extensive skills in many areas. He is flexible, cooperative, and a very skilled educator who has improved the contents of many courses considerably. Antti has received excellent spontaneous feedback from both students and other teachers.

Good teacher: Antti Laaksonen

University Lecturer Pirjo Moen

has been awarded the title Good teacher 2010 at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki.  The grounds for rewarding her include the following:

Pirjo Moen is an exceptionally versatile teacher, whose course repertoire includes important courses from each sub-programme. She has coordinated the international student application process, as well as prepared and implemented the orientation course for international Master's programme students. She has received very positive feedback for this work from new foreign students. She has single-mindedly trained herself as an educator and applied this training in a versatile manner with the aim of in-depth learning for her students.

Mikko Pervilä, Master of Science

has been awarded the title Good researcher 2010 at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. The grounds for rewarding him include the following:

In 2010, Mikko took the iniative for a significant experimental part of his work, where he was studying the cooling of server parks outside. On the basis of his research, an article was published in the Green Networking workshop organised in connection with the top networking conference, ACM SIGCOMM.   The article has received significant international attention and was selected to be included in the "Best of SIGCOMM 2010 Workshops" issue of the ACM Computer Communications Review. It will be published early in 2011. His research has also received a great deal of attention in th media, including YLE, IT-viikko, and the Communications of the ACM newsfeed.

Postdoctoral Researcher Valentin Polishchuk

has been awarded the Department of Computer Science senior researcher’s reward in 2010. His award was justified e.g. as follows:

Valentin Polishchuk has become an international-level player in computational geometry with several publications in top journals and conferences of the field; as a recognition, he was in the program committee of the 26th Annual Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG'10). Not only has he focused on this one specific field, but he has also collaborated with several researchers (currently 32) on varying topics in theoretical computer science. Most notably, many undergraduate students have had the opportunity to join the fascinating world of science through his guidance.
