Chancellor's Travel Grant

Researchers and teachers at the University of Helsinki may apply for the Chancellor’s travel grant to cover the costs of foreign travel for academic purposes. The grants are particularly intended for researchers in the first and second stage of the four-stage research-career model (doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers) for conference trips abroad. A prerequisite for a conference travel grant is that the applicant will give a talk or have a poster or other scientific presentation at the conference.

When estimating the amount of the travel grant, travel costs and accommodation expenses and participation fees will be taken into account. In addition, a per diem allowance (for direct employees of the University) or reimbursement up to the amount of the per diem allowance (for example for employees on grant funding) will be taken into account.

The grant may be applied for for one trip abroad only. If there are no special grounds (such as cancellation of the conference), the grant has to be used during the year 2014 and for the trip for which it has been applied. The grant cannot be applied for for a trip that has already been completed. The trips are made following the University of Helsinki instructions for travelling.

Applications are submitted online through an electronic application form. Applications do not include attachments. The application form is available at:

http://helsinki.fi/aava/kansleri/.

The application period begins on Thursday February 6, 2014, at 12:00 noon, and ends on Friday February 28, 2014, at 3:45 p.m.

The electronic application form will open at the start of the application period on February 6, 2014, and close at the end of the application period on February 28, 2014. It is not possible to submit an application after the application period has closed, and late applications will not be processed.

Who can apply for the travel grant?

Researchers and teachers at the University of Helsinki may apply for travel grants. The applicant can be a post-graduate student of the University of Helsinki working on grant funding, for example, or a researcher who is a direct employee of the University. The grants are particularly intended for researchers at the first and second stage of the four-stage research-career model (doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers).

In the February call for applications travel grants may be applied for by researchers and teachers in faculties and independent institutes which are listed on the application page (http://helsinki.fi/aava/kansleri/). Doctoral students may apply for travel grants in the faculty, in which they are completing their doctoral degree. NB: The Faculty of Medicine will award travel grants only to doctoral students who are registered in the Faculty of Medicine.

To which faculty do I submit my application?

On the application page, you can choose the faculty, from which you are applying for the travel grant. Choose the faculty at which you work, or if you are a doctoral student, for example, the faculty in which you complete your doctoral degree. Remember to also notify your faculty and department on the application form accordingly.

For what kind of trips can the travel grant be applied?

The travel grant is intended to cover the costs of foreign travel for academic purposes. Thus, travel grants cannot be applied for for domestic trips. Usually the travel grant is applied to a conference trip abroad.

To what expenses can the travel grant be applied?

The travel grant can be applied to cover travel costs and accommodation expenses and participation fees, and a per diem allowance or reimbursement up to the amount of the per diem allowance. You can check the per diem allowance at your country of destination from the University of Helsinki instructions for travel.

When filling in your application, estimate your travel costs realistically and take into account all of the above-mentioned expenses. Please mention, if you have some other funding available for your trip.

Is it possible to apply for travel grant for more than just one trip?

Due to the largenumber of applicants, each applicant may apply for a travel grant for one trip abroad only.

Is it possible to use the travel grant for another trip than the one indicated in the application?

If there are no special grounds, the travel grant has to be used for the trip for which it has been applied for, and for which it has been awarded based on a certain application. A special ground might for example be a cancellation of the original conference. In such cases, the original decision-maker can approve the use of the travel grant for another trip abroad similar to the original one.
