Ubiquitous Interaction studies the design, development and evaluation of interactivity with users in ubiquitous and mobile computing systems. The research is carried out by coupling in-depth user studies with design in the area of novel interfaces. The goal is to contribute to technology development efforts by deepening understanding of human and design perspectives. Currently, research is conducted in different areas: multitouch displays, adaptive and affective interfaces, multimodal interaction, information exploration and social computing. Application areas range from energy awareness, home computing, art and culture, workplace and knowledge work.

The research group is affiliated with the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT.

Ubiquitous Interaction also provides several ways for students to study Human-Computer Interaction through the Networking and Services Program. 

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them (ACM SIGCHI 1996).

• Human-Computer Interaction (6 credits, 4th period)

• Interface Technologies (6 credits,  1st and 2nd period)
  This master level course will extend the skills acquired during the bachelor level HCI course.
• Interactive Systems (6 credits, 3rd and 4th period)
  This master level course will provide students with in-depth knowledge of issues in the design, implementation and evaluation of interactive systems. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop a state-of-the-art interactive system in a teamwork assignment.
