Quality Manual of the Department of Computer Science

Funding

Sources of funding

The funding of the department consists of basic funding allocated by the university and complementary external funding.

Principles for allocation of funding

The faculty council decides on the criteria for dividing the funds allocated to the faculty. A computational model approved by the faculty council is employed for allocating the funds inside the faculty. The dean decides on any possible separate allocations to the department. The steering committee of the department gives its approval to the annual allocation from the faculty and decides on the principles for the use of funds allocated to the department.

Budgeted funding

The allocated budget of the Department of Computer Science consists of the allocated funding produced by a computational model, the funding allocated to the graduate schools, project funding, and funding allocated on the basis of productivity.

The budgeted funding constitutes 2/3 of the total funding for the department. (Annual report)

External funding

External funding makes up 1/3 of the department’s total funding. Some 60 research projects on external funding are active at the department annually. The largest bodies funding research at the department are the Finnish Academy and Tekes. Other funding sources include the EU, and various foundations and trust funds. (Annual report)

The administration services for projects with external funding have been described under project administration.
