Web character set decision reconsidered - päätöstä www-merkistöstä muutettu

Finnish version follows / Suomenkielinen versio alla

The recent decision and action of enforcing the use of utf-8 encoding on our web pages has caused a great confusion and a lot of broken old pages. Therefore, the decision has been reconsidered. Starting Monday morning, Feb 16 2015 there will be no default character set on the web pages of the Department of Computer Science.

The character set used on a page can be determined in the following ways:

1) by adding it in the <head> section (utf-8 is here on example)

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />

2) by adding the character set as an extension to the file name, for example

index.html.iso8859-1

In links this file can be referred simply as index.html. The web server must have read access to the directory where the file resides.

3) by letting browsers to guess the right characters set.

Utf-8 is still the recommended coding for all new pages.

Päätös ottaa utf-8-koodaus käyttöön lähes pakollisena www-sivuillamme on aiheuttanut suurta hämmennystä ja rikkonut paljon vanhoja sivuja. Päätöstä on siksi harkittu uudelleen.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />

2) lisätään merkistö ylimääräisenä lääjennuksena tiedoston nimeen, esimerkiksi

index.html.iso8859-15

Linkeissä tähän tiedostoon voi viitata yksinkertaisesti nimellä index.html. Www-palvelimella tulee olla lukuoikeus hakemistoon, jossa tiedosto sijaitsee.

Utf-8 on edelleen suositelluin koodaus kaikille uusille sivuille.
