Library Newsletter: New CS Contact & ResearchGuide Site

Hello everyone,

The library CS contact has changed. I´ll be providing regular newsletter updates from now on and you´ll be seeing me at department events. If you have any questions, feedback or are wondering about anything library related please contact me at valtteri.vainikka@helsinki.fi. I´ll be glad to help!

First of all I´d like to congratulate all the new students. Welcome! As University of Helsinki students you now have access to over 15 000 computer science eBooks and around 1400 journals, conference proceedings and magazines. And that´s just computer science – all in all you have access to over 500 000 eBooks.

You can get a new library card straight away at any of our campus libraries. You can also apply for a Helka-card online. Your new card will then be available for pick up after two working days. Just remember to bring your identity card or passport with you!

It can sometimes be challenging to find computer science specific material and services from our main website. This is why we´ve been building field specific portal sites we call ResearchGuides. They are primarily aimed at individual department students and staff. They bring together all our field specific services, news feeds and so forth in one easy to use location. You probably already guess where this is going… There´s now a site for computer science as well! I would suggest making it one of your bookmarks. I´ll be updating it throughout the semester with new pages, news and other content. Please email me if you have any feedback, improvement suggestions or perhaps notice if something is broken on the site. I´ll try to fix it as soon as possible.

All the links on the site are proxy enabled so they can be used outside the university network as well. It will just ask for your standard university login/password if you are trying to access restricted material.

Here are a few other quick updates:

  • New Material: the Springer Computer Science 2015 package provides over 400 brand new eBooks. They are currently being added to our Helka library catalogue, but can already be browsed and downloaded via the previous link.
  • New Material: CRC Press Catalogue 2013-2015 includes 159 eBook titles in Computer Science & Engineering and 14 titles in Computer Game Development. Unfortunately by default this link also shows books that we do not have a license for: make sure you click on the “Full Access Content Only” checkbox next to the top left corner CRCnetBASE logo and then update the selection by clicking on a subject category. These eBooks can also be found in Helka.
  • Found something interesting that´s not in our collection yet? Please send us an acquisition proposal via this form. We generally aim to buy most materials that are suggested by CS department students and staff.
  • Last but not least, the amount of printed textbook copies for CS courses has been increased. In many cases the ordered books are still on their way, but should arrive at the beginning of the semester. Please keep an eye on Helka as new copies will be added there as soon as we get them! We´ve had to prioritize certain large courses that do not have an electronic version of the textbook in use yet, but we´ll continue to increase textbook amounts throughout the year. This will continue next year as well.

Have a great week,

Valtteri
