Three concepts: probability (581287) Spring 2008

14.01.-22.2. Wed 13-16 B222, 10.03.-25.04. Wed 15-16 B222

The course will introduce the concept of probability and study the main arguments for its usefulness. It will further introduce probabilistic modeling emphasizing learning discrete multivariate models from data in Bayesian way.

1. In CS curriculum

Three concepts: probability is an optional advanced level (Laudatur) course in the Intelligent Systems specialization area. Passing the course grants 6 credit points (3cu).

2. Prerequisites

The course assumes knowledge about knowledge representation at the level taught in Artificial Intelligence course. Familiarity with propositional logic and calculus may be helpful as well as previous exposure to the basic probability calculus. The course will contain computer programming.

3. Material

The course is lectured in English if any of the participant is non-Finnish speaker. All the course material is in English.

The course does not follow any single textbook, but all the material is made available on lectures and/or Moodle.

Lecture notes

  1. Introduction
  2. Probability Calculus
  3. Bayesian networks
  4. Famous network models
  5. Data analysis

4. Grading and exams

The first half of the course contains traditional lectures. There are "simple" weekly assignments to monitor the learning. The assignments will be graded and they must be submitted weekly to the course assistant.

The second part of the course will contain programming projects, home-exam like problem solving and writing essays.

The course grade brake-up:

  • Homework assignments 30%
  • Projects 70%

5. Instructors' contact

The course is lectured by Tomi Silander (tomi dot silander at cs dot helsinki dot fi). Office hours are held by appointment (send email).

Teaching assistant for the course is Mika Urtela (mika dot urtela at cs dot helsinki dot fi).
