In short:

APPA is a one-year project (2002; in continuation of an earlier period) funded by the industries.

The researchers are prof. Helena Ahonen-Myka (professor in charge), MSc Oskari Heinonen (project manager), MSc Reeta Kuuskoski, Otso Virtanen, MSc Juha Makkonen, Tex Härme, MA Lili Aunimo, PhD Greger Lindén, and Kim Viljanen (previously).

About the project:

The project designs and implements a question-answer (Q/A) system for automatic processing of text queries. A user asks questions by e-mail or SMS; the Q/A systems responds on the same media with the relevant answer. Answers and questions are stored in a database. If no relevant answers can be found, the question is routed to a human expert for responding and the new answer will be inserted into the database. Answers may also be automatically routed via a human expert for approval before they are forwarded.

There are several application domains. A typical example is a company helpdesk. Customers ask questions about company products. The Q/A system responds with relevant product information about versions, prices, updates, faults, etc.
