Game description

MoDM was created for Games and Virtual Environments 2005 course. It is a light turn based strategy game where 2 to 4 players control armies of fruit flies and try to capture the bio-container. Fast paced turns and ubiquitous user interface make this a easy-to-learn and fun-to-play game.

Flies can be mutated into any of the 5 known mutation in the game (worker, attacker, defender, carrier and queen) which all have different abilities. To mutate a fly it has to be moved to special toxic waste tile on the map. Players get new flies based on how many tiles they occupy. They can also use queens to lay eggs and create even larger armies to defend their home and to attack other players.

This project gave a good idea how game design and production process works and what are the real world aspects one has to consider when designing or implementing a game. Another good learning was to learn how turn based strategy game can be balanced. Extensive testing of game features and player behaviour will lead to balanced game rules and model which can be used to create AI for turn based games. Next obvious steps for this project would be to start testing and implementing AI, increase rules complexity, add network play and polish the visual outlook.

Background story

There has been an dangerous leak at the Helsinki University's department of madness. Hazardous biological substances have been released to the air and all personel has been evacuated. Surveillance cameras have provided quite shocking footage inside the building. Scientist have learned that the gas floating in the basement has weird protein structures and it seems to kill cancer cells. Only one tiny microscopic container lying on the floor remains undamaged. Can this little container hold the secret for the cure of cancer?

All mad scientists want to get the container to patent the magical molecules and get the Nobel prize. But the toxic gasses kill all living organisms and no human can enter the building. But the geniuos scientists quickly mutated armies of fruit flies and send them in. The one whose army will be victorious will have all the glory!

Download & installation

Download the modm_100.zip, 5,64 megabytes. And follow these three easy installation steps:

1. Extract modm_100.zip to installation directory
2. Execute modm.bat (Win) or modm.sh (*nix) to start the game
3. You have to have to have Java 1.5.0 virtual machine in the path
