Application advice

How to find a potential supervisor

Hecse only admits students supervised by a member of the Hecse board who is working at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, or in any of the laboratories at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Helsinki University of Technology.

Applicants that do not yet have a supervisor should decide which potential supervisor to contact, based on their chosen topic and interests for PhD studies. This is the first test of the applicants' capabilities of successfully pursuing studies in the Finnish system.

Duration of Hecse funding

Hecse provides funding for a maximum of 4 years (48 months). Students should state for how long a period they would prefer funding and when the funding period would start. In normal cases, the period would start on 1 January 2008 (the earliest), but in some cases the funding period may start later (e.g., if the student already has some other funding/work commitment for the spring of 2008, the period could start on 1 August 2008).

Hecse expects students to finish their PhD degrees in 4 years and will take this into account when providing funding. If some of the PhD studies have been completed with other funding, Hecse funding may accordingly be reduced to a shorter period than 48 months.

Students who have completed part of their PhD studies should apply for a shorter funding period than 48 months.

All applications will be considered for adjunct positions. The best applicants (unless applying only for adjunct positions) will be considered for funding.

Research and study plan

The requirements for doctoral students are found in the study guides of the universities. Applicants should check especially the study guide of the university they are going to do their studies in. For TKK the information is available on the Studies page of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. For the University of Helsinki the information is available on the Studies page of Department of Computer Science.

Diploma copies

Students who have already been accepted as post-graduate students by the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology can use the normal Finnish style of confirming copies. There is no need for official confirmation.

However, students who do not have a post-graduate position in either of the participating universities MUST include officially confirmed copies.

Financing plan

The financing plan must indicate how the student is going to finance his or her full-time post-graduate studies. The plan should be as precise as possible.

If the student is applying only for funding from Hecse this should be indicated in the financing plan.

Otherwise the application will also be considered for an adjunct position, and the plan must contain a description of how the studies will be financed in this case.

TOEFL or other proof of language skill

This probably is the most frequently asked question: "I am studying at X using English, do I need to take the exam?" The answer is yes, unless you had your education in English.

Instead of TOEFL, students can also use their GRE results.

If students have already been accepted as a PhD students to either the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology, then they probably have submitted proof of their language skills. When applying to Hecse, the student can then use the same certificate (TOEFL or some other certificate), but should make it clear in the application that he or she has already been accepted as a post-graduate student by either university (and indicate which university).
