Application information

Teaching in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki is of high quality. The department has over 2300 students, and its location at the Kumpula campus offers first-rate facilities for studying and research as a part of a larger concentration of mathematical and scientific know-how. The department also conducts cutting-edge international research in many fields.

The basic degrees of the educational programme of computer science are the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees. The BSc is the primary and MSc the secondary university degree. The primary degree can be completed in three years and the secondary in five years. Higher degrees are the Licentiate (PhLic) and the Doctoral (PhD) degrees.

Undergraduates (B.Sc.) and graduates (M.Sc.)

Studies in the CS department consist of courses which are based on lectures, exercises and projects. Most of our courses are lectured in Finnish, but there is some instruction in English, too. The department tries to give exercise sessions in English whenever there is a need for them. In addition, most course material is available in English.
