Yes, I did too.
But with plain vanilla 2.5.74, without the patch that I posted.
You shouldn't need that patch, but like Greg said,
USB_SERIAL=y is required for USB_SERIAL_CONSOLE.
It can't be built as modules.

Let's get rid of those dragons. If the problem persists, please
send me your .config file.
