The patch needs to be updated to recent kernels.. (The maintainer is very
busy, or so I hear).. Last version of the patch is for .59..
If you are refering to inclusion in the OFFICIAL kernel, then the user
tools need some polish and the inode field it uses should be declared
official by the maintainer of ext2 (that would also require some
corridnation with the ext2 ACL people..)..
After that, you'll prob have to post many testamonials.. It seems that
ext2+compr is suffering the same trouble as the gimp.. Maby people saw .54
and were turned off by it's limitations, it very hard to convince these
people that the current version rivals photoshop, because all they can
think of is .54..
When I talk about ext2 compression lots of people think double or
stacker.. They dont know that it's a neat little file attribute which
enables transparent compression on a file by file or directory basis..
Many of these people also think of how dangerous stacker and friends could
be on dos computers.. There is alot of FUD out there...
Finaly, many people just say 'just get a bigger drive'.. That is a
shameful though.. Once, while commenting on the bloat of NT, I was told to
just buy more ram.. As a Linux user and developer I pride myself in saying
that my os lets me get the most out of my computing investment..
I've got several linux boxes that just do dedicated things like webserving
or web caching.. They seldom have anyone logged into them.. However,
because I still want to be able to log into them, they must have all the
command utils and shells and such on the drive.. With ext2+comp I could
allow these boxes to better use their hard drives..
