2.0.35 on Alpha - floppy strangeness

We're encountering some weird problems on a PC164SX based system
that 2.0.35 has been installed on. Booting MILO from floppy is
fine, but after the machine is installed you can't access
the floppy *at all*. No mount, no mtools, no tar /dev/fd0,
*nothing*. When you back down to 2.0.30 all is well.

The only difference we can find seems to be with respect to
write_block and read_block, where the return values have been
changed from long to int.

Ideas, anyone?
