That's normal. Scrollback doesn't work on frame buffer devices unless you have
a virtual screen that's larger than your visible screen.

Vesafb doesn't support a virtual screen. Some other frame buffer devices for
non-Intel architectures do.

Yes :-) AX should save the state of the video card and restore it on VC
switch. AFAIK AX doesn't do this (at least the old V1.3 I still use at work
always tries to switch back to 80x25 VGA text) because this can't be done
safely on broken (read: most) PC video boards.
