PPPIOCGUNIT

[Paradox]

I am using linux 2.2.5 with pppd 2.3.8, but whenever I do a call like this:

/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem1 115200 nodetach 192.168.2.2:192.168.2.1

It errors out very quickly with this in syslog:

pppd[685]: ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT): Operation not permitted (1)

What could be causing this? Is there a better way to setup a PPP server for
one other computer...I have it so that mgetty answers the phone and then
they can login as a certain user whose shell starts a script which runs the
above command.
