Oops (v2.2.10) in update [ll_rw_block] leads to lockup.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
My dual P5-100 SMP system (toritsu) stopped running sometime last
night. I was able to ping the kernel from another machine over
ethernet, but I was unable to remotely login.
The console showed several Oopses, but it didn't respond to any
keystrokes (it did echo them back though). Even Ctrl-Alt-Del was
unresponsive.
I manually wrote down the first Oops data, but after rebooting, I was
able to examine the logs, and the Oopses that are shown below are from
the logs.
During reboot, fsck failed to clean up my root partition. I had to
run fsck manually, and it seemed to result in a lost mail log file.
The system is mostly idle, except that it runs rc5des (RC5-64 contest)
in the background. It's a SuSE 6.1 install with a 2.2.10 kernel.
Around midnight, there's a lot of disk activity from scheduled system
tasks, including updatedb.
[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
oops, kernel, update, ll_rw_block, vfs, mm
[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
Linux toritsu 2.2.10 #2 SMP Thu Jul 29 07:26:40 JST 1999 i586 unknown
[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
The following 4 reports come straight from the system log. The system
locked up more than 9 hours after the last oops, with no trace of the
reason for the lockup (other than these oopses). I've included system
log entries that have the same time stamp as the oops.
Note, I didn't run ksymoops on these, as they already have some
symbolic information included. Running ksymoops on this data didn't
provide any additional useful info (other than decoding the code
sequence).

[7.] Environment
The system is a stock SuSE 6.1 with the kernel upgraded to 2.2.10 and
recompiled for SMP. The full .config is included at the end.
The system is mostly idle, except relying on NFS for mounting my home
directory from another machine, and running rc5des in the background
(since early August).

[X.] Other notes, patches, fixes, workarounds:
Now, before I upgraded this system to SuSE 6.1, it was running without
any problems on kernel 2.0.30 and libcs starting from an old Slackware
style distribution that I upgraded as things changed (a.out to elf,
etc...) Before the upgrade, I was runing the 53c7,8xx driver
(CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C7xx) and after the upgraded I decided to start
using the ncr53c8xx driver (CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX). I don't think
that's necessarily the problem, but just so you know.
I noticed that SuSE installs egcs as the default gcc compiler. Before
SuSE, I would always use gcc 2.7.2.3 (as recommended). However, the
reason for the upgrade to SuSE was to upgrade to a 2.2 distribution,
because I was having lots of problems (on another system) bringing
myself from 2.0 to 2.2 (on RedHat, but that's not relevant here). So,
I'd like to avoid installing gcc 2.7.2.3 just to compile a kernel,
because I want to stay as close to the distribution as I can.
Also, I know new 2.2.x kernels have been released. Before I upgrade
to those, I'd like to report my problem and see if it's been fixed (or
at least observed by others). Other than this fault, I have the exact
same distribution running on a PII-300 and a P5-166-MMX laptop with
kernels 2.2.10 kernels compiled specifically for them, and they
haven't shown any problems (yet).
BTW, here's my full .config for the faulting SMP system:
