2.3.35 ACPI hangs in UP kernel on BP6

2.3.35, compiled with gcc 2.7.2.3 for UP.  Booting on a dual Celeron
ABIT BP6.  The boot process hangs in acpi_idle_handler.  Diagnostic
printk shows it gets through sleep1, branches to sleep2 and hangs on
inb(acpi_p_blk + ACPI_P_LVL2);
