2.2.13 + 2GB RAM: Out of memory

I have Intel C440GX+ with 2GB of RAM.

If I compile 2.2.13 with 2GB RAM support I get the
"Out of memory" kernel message.
The same happens even with append="mem=512M" in LILO.

2.2.13 with 1GB RAM support works fine, but just with
960MB of course.

Any help appreciated.
