2.3 boot problems

I have been working on getting the 2.3.x kernel series running on my
machine (I want to play with USB a little bit) and I've run into a little
snag. I cannot get any kernel above 2.3.10 to boot. Every revision I've
tried will compile, but when it comes to booting it gets to "Uncompressing
kernel... Ok, booting the kernel." then hangs. Nothing happens after this.

The machine is an AMD K6-2/400 with 128MB of RAM, running Redhat 6.0. I've
searched the kernel list archives and I saw one reference to a similar
problem, but the solution had something to do with needing to turn off SMP.
I don't have SMP compiled in since I don't need it. Any help would be
appreciated.
