Also, how does this relate to similar features in CODA, DFS and AFS (Arla)?
It's usefull, but is it the _only_ way to go about doing things?
Should we have some generic/unified approach to this?

I know I need this, but it doesn't mean that I want diffrent come in and do
ad-hoc patches to make their stuff work, I'd rather see some joint effort for
a generic interface so that future additions become less messy to do.
