pre2.3.47-6 breaks networking (3c509)

With pre2.3.47-6 cannot bring up network card -- 3c509.
get SIOCSIFFLAGS: operation not supported by device
Have not tried the earlier pre2.3.47's. All's well with
2.3.46.
