serial / pppd not working with modem in pre3

My analogue modem was working nicely with 2.3.51 and it does
not work with 2.3.99 pre 3 and pre 5. The modem gives me a
CONNECT but everything after that (PPP, LCP) does not work,
the pppd does not get any feedback.

Somewhere from 2.3.51 to 2.3.99pre3 something changed which
prevents my modem from working? Where should I look? I am
hardly into all the kernel internals nor do I speak C well
enough.
