card is physically ejected at this point and the machine locks up solidly, no serial
activity, no keyboard, no nothing.

however, do a normal shutdown -hf now, and the machine does -NOT- hang if you pull
the card out after it is 'halted'. (numblock still toggles)

boot with init=/bin/bash, card ejected.

insert card, lose keyboard, machine no longer repsonds, numlock is also dead.
