Steppings/microcode questions...

Can someone tell me what the difference Steppings mean on a CPU mean? are
some better than others?
In a dual machine should the CPU's have the same stepping to run properly?
I have a Dual PII system which has a Stepping 2 and Stepping 3 Processor in
it. (it was brought new like this)
Will this affect the reliability of Linux?
Can I find out what steppings a CPU has without opening the sealled box (can
I find it from outside via serial number/box)?

Also alot of newer Motherboards when they boot up say Microcode version
whatever
What does this exactly mean?
