After I upgraded to 2.3.99-pre5, fsck fails on boot-up. The error I
receive is that the superblocks are not found. The partition is fine,
because it checks out OK on the 2.2 kernels. Do I need to recompile the
e2fsprogs using the 2.3 sources?

No, that shouldn't be necessary. This sounds like a partition table
incompatibility of some kind..... do you still have a problem using the
latest 2.3.99pre6-7 kernels?
