quake3 slowdown in 2.2.15pre19 and 2.2.16pre1

When playing quake3(voodoo3, device3dfx), I experience tons of 'pauses' while
playing. The video continues to update, and I see people walking by me. I
just can't move. It is like quake can't read from the keyboard.

This problem shows in 2.2.15pre15, but no where near as much.

I don't have any other programs that exhibit this behaviour. 2.2.16pre1 had
the one line patch applied to fix screen. Both before and after, this slow
down was still evident.

Dual celeron 333, md1 on scsi, md0 on ide. cipe, alsa, and device3dfx modules
are compiled.
