Found the cause - ncftpd. As to why 2.2.16 would cause that repeated message
to the console, curious artifact but never mind ... proftpd runs as well for
me anyhow, so I'll just switch back to it (was trying ncftpd to see if it
dealt with a problem an upstream Redback router has with certain byte
sequences - didn't help).
