Abstract

Construction of phylogenetic trees is a classical area in Computational Biology. A species tree is a phylogenetic tree that describes the evolutionary history of a number of species. A gene tree describes the evolutionary history of a number of genes. Due to evolutionary events, such as duplications and lateral transfers, that create new genes but not new species, a gene tree can disagree with the corresponding species tree. We will discuss algorithms that use gene trees to construct species trees as well as algorithms for mapping duplications and lateral transfer events onto a species tree.
