Communications and PR
Where do I go for information?
Public information
Current news and events for the whole department are posted on the front page of the department's website at http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/.
- You can subscribe to the news and events newsfeed (RSS) on the front page.
- You can also subscribe to events updates to your e-calendar on the front page.
In addition to short news items and event announcements, the page contains longer items and blog columns.
Information for department staff
Current news intended only for department staff is located on the Administration tab on the website (https://www.cs.helsinki.fi/en/administration).
- You can also subscribe to these news and event items as feeds or to your calendar.
- A compilation of the latest news and upcoming events (from both the above categories) is sent to the department mailing list regularly.
Only important work-related and urgent information will be sent to the moderated mailing list (tktl-list) for the whole department. Other items will be posted on the website first, and regular compilations will be sent to the mailing list.
The unmoderated mailing list for leisure activities (tktl-vapaa-list-3) is intended for messages on matters that are not directly related to work, and for leisure activities. You can unsubscribe from this list by asking Amanuensis Teija Kujala (D235).
Other dedicated information channels
The department website also has other news and events feeds for informing about specified areas, such as on the Studies (for students) and Computer facilities (service breaks and IT news) tabs.
Further, the department has separate mailing lists for students, professors, principal investigators, postgraduates, etc, see http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/node/287.
How can I inform others about an event or news item?
We hope you will inform the department about events, news, or anything we might find interesting. The administration handles all information about the administration of the department, but any other information about what is happening at the department can only spread if people who know about it tell us about it. Or if you realise something has not been advertised, contact whoever is in charge of it or knows more about it, and ask them to spread the news!
Entering events in the department calendar
- Log in at the bottom of the page at https://www.cs.helsinki.fi/en/home.
- Select 'Add content' -> 'Event' at the top of the page.
- Select where you want the information to be posted from the ‘Events Category’ bar.
‘Main Events’ > displayed on the front page for the world to see
‘Internal Events’ > displayed on the Administration tab, events for the department staff
‘Studies’ > events for students, displayed on the Studies tab
‘Alumni’ > displayed on the alumni tab, events for alumni - Enter the event information. Please use the language of the event for the announcement.
Select the language ‘suomi’ from the menu if the event is in Finnish (will not be displayed in the English calendar), or ‘language neutral’ if it is in English (will be displayed in all the calendars).
If you wish, you can then post it on the tktl-list. If the event is not in English, please add a comment at the beginning of your message to explain what is going on. Please also add a link to the event announcement you entered on the website to your message. Do not send reminders of the event to the tktl-list.
Adding news or other short items
- Log in at the bottom of the page at https://www.cs.helsinki.fi/en/home.
- Select 'Add content' -> 'News' at the top of the page.
‘News’ > displayed on the front page, a news item that the department wants the world to see
‘Internal Events’ > displayed on the Administration tab, a news item for the department staff
‘Studies’ > news items for students, displayed on the Studies tab
‘CS IT News’ > IT news displayed on the Computing facilities tab - Write your item. Pictures are nice; you can use the department's image bank (see instructions below).
News should preferably be added in both Finnish and English. Do not forget to select the language of the first version from the drop-down menu. Then you can make the translation of it with the ‘Translation’ feature. You can also save only the Finnish version and ask Marina Kurtén to translate it into English.
Need pictures or a photographer?
The department is developing an image pool that people can freely access for department bulletins.
We also have the permission of the photographers to use the photos at the following addresses for department news items:
- http://www.flickr.com/photos/esaskar/sets/72157626481674052 (Esa Pitkänen)
- http://www.flickr.com/photos/esaskar/ (Esa Pitkänen), try tags like TKTL, Kumpula, etc.
- http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/mcrantan/ (Mikko Rantanen)
- http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/taina/tktlkuvat/ (Juha Taina)
A guide for how to insert images is available on http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/en/compfac/editing-drupal-pages -> Adding attachments. After inserting the image, you can and should adjust its size and placement (e.g. align=left or right and hspace=5 etc). You can adjust an image that is already on the page by right-clicking it.
Finding a photographer
The following people have kindly promised to take photographs for department news now and then. If you need a photographer, you can ask one of the following (to avoid overworking one person, please do not always ask the first one on the list):
- Fabian Fagerholm
- Mikko Rantanen
- Juha Taina
NOTE:
- Always mention the photographer at the end of your story, e.g. 'Photo by Fabian Fagerholm.'
- If there are recognisable people in the foreground of the photo, please ask them for permission to use the photo.
