New professor Tomi Männistö
My current research in Software Engineering can be characterised by the acronym Preago used for the research group established at Aalto University. I aim to maintain the good collaboration with colleagues in Aalto, so I see the activities of Preago spanning the two universities. The Preago research themes of interest include software products, software intensive services and product variability in particular from the perspectives of requirements engineering (e.g., user needs and value), software architecture (e.g., product family architecture and quality variability) and conceptual modelling.
Having only spent some time at the department, my first impressions are very positive. The overall atmosphere is friendly and encouraging, which means a lot. My expectations from the department boil down to providing me with a working environment and opportunities for establishing and nurturing high-class research in Software Engineering. The teaching in the department as the whole is excellent. This relates to bridging the practice and research is essential for Software Engineering. I’d love to help in educating software engineering professionals with a means and attitude of making an impact. That includes the graduates being equipped to face up even the most complex and ill-formed problems of the real world and find out the ways software can be of assistance.
I love travelling, especially with my wife Satu. We have been to many places and still desire for more. Our travelling is not entirely unrelated with our interest in cooking and eating well. I also like photography, including documenting the places we go to, but I sometimes like to do some more abstract stuff.
