Work for the society and the research community

I never like to turn down people who ask for my help. Thus, I tend to do quite a lot of work outside my everyday teaching and research activities. Below are some of my recent contributions to the society and the International research community.

Peer reviews

I do tens of peer reviews a year for workshops, conferences, journals, and book publishers. Lately, I've done reviews for

  • IEEE JSAC
  • Elsevier Computer Networks (COMNET)
  • Elsevier Journal of Systems and Software (JSS)
  • Simulations: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International
  • Springer Wireless Networks
  • IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications
  • PIMRC 2007
  • Globecom 2006
  • IWWAN 2006
  • IWWAN 2005
  • ICC 2005
  • ICCP 2005
  • ACM Wireless Networks (WINET)
  • HICSS

I've done some reviews of book proposals, e.g., for Wiley, and Cambridge University Press.

I also do (too many) reviews of IETF Internet Drafts, both official reviews, and unofficial, just to help the authors improve their work.

I've been on the Technical Program Committee of Globecom 2006 and IWWAN 2006, and session chair at IWWAN 2004-2006. And will join the TPCs of PIMRC 2008 and IWQoS 2008.

In addition I've done an external peer review of a PhLic. thesis and a PhD. dissertation.

Activities in the Finnish Society

I'm a founding member of the Finnish Linux and Open Source Initiate, a group seeking to advance the exchange of ideas between Finnish universities and IT companies, and create new innovative research projects in the fields of Linux and open source in general.

I also initiated the Helsinki Open Source Lab (Hoslab), a service for promoting the open source software, and great know-how, of research projects at the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University of Technology.

I was the representative of the Helsinki University of Technology in the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications' information security programme for 2005 to 2006 called LUOTI, and discussing the future of teaching information security in Finland.

I also provide feedback to a recent effort to define computer science terminology in Finnish.

International standardization

I have contributed to the international standardization work within the IETF for some eight years, in numerous working groups.

I'm an independent expert for IANA on questions related to new Protocol Number Assignment Services.
