This guide includes the best places to hith-hike out of cities , how totravel free in trams & metros, where to eat, general tips etc. Some of the info is quoted from another page in the net, some are my own tips. Tips with * are sure and have been tested by me or someone I know.

General tips

  1. Take a lift before you go on a ferry. It's almost impossible to hitchhike on the other side.
  2. Take the most used route, not the shortest one (think where the trucks are going: industrial areas etc)
  3. Carry a good map. It also helps if gas stations are marked

West, E52, Munich

Take bus #3068 to tankstelle Walserberg.
Or take a train to Traunstein, Germany and hitch from there.
Or take bus #G to the Landstraße/Samstraße junction. Then walk 300 metres along Samstraße to Ruprechterstraße and wait at the Raststätte Kasern services.

South, E55, Ljubljana

Take bus 3 to the terminus then walk south along Alpenstraße to the junction with the A10.

East, E60, Wien

Take bus #3068 to tankstelle Walserberg.

Belgium

Hitchhiking is usual and easy in Belgium because of the poor public transport. People speak French and usually English.

Brussels

Take tram 52 or 92 to Heizel, where the highway starts

* Take a local train to Ruisbroek station and find a gas station

Take bus #5-7 to Iskar or to Camping Varna. Hitch at the traffic lights of Sharigradsko Shose and Iskarsko Shose.

Northwest, E80, Beograd

Take bus #42, #54, #81 or #242 to Clivniska. Hitch from the gas station or from traffic lights.

West, E871, Skopje(mk)

Take tram #5, #11 to the final stop. Hitch somewhere there

East, E772, Varna, Bucarest

Take #21 or #22 to Letostruij. Hitch somewhere there

Varna

West, Sofia,E772

Take bus #7 or #48 to Vladislav Varnenchik. Walk forward 500m and start hitching.

North, Bucarest

Take tram # 88 to Napogni Bugitel. Walk 200m to the beginning of motorway

Czech Republic

Hitchhiking is very usual, motorways and big roads are full of people. Getting a lift is pretty easy. Truck drivers usually speak a little German. On the border to Poland you have to go by car. Trucks stuck on the border for hours, so try to get in an person car (it is also possible to get a lift on the border).

Praha

*East, South (Poland, Austria...), E50

Take the metro to Opatov and whether walk to the side of the motorway or take a local bus to the next gas station.

West, Germany, Nürnberg E50

the highway which starts in Stodulky in the western suburbs

North, Dresden, E55

Take the metro to Holosovice and walk to the gas station by highway just before the river Vltava (200 m)

public transport

metro is very cheap, but buying a ticket is not necessary. Some inspectors occur, but not very effectively.

Food

Most restaurants (they are cheap) have vegetarian food on their menus, also vegan food can be found. Vegetarian restaurant: Franz Kafky 5.

Croatia

In Croatia it is forbidden to hitchhike on motorways, express roads and access lanes

Zagreb

West, E70, Ljubljana

Take tram 5 or 17 and get off at the terminus, walk north along Hrvatskog sokola until you get to Ljubljanska avenija. Hitchhike before the highway begins.
or take bus 111/112/132/164/165/168 to Lucko, post office, on Puskariceva Ulica. Walk 1,5km north to big gas station Odmoriste.
or take bus 107/114/115/ 116/ 117 to the crossroad of Ljubljanska Avenija and Rudeska cesta. Hitch-hike from the traffic lights

South, E65, Rijeka

hitch on Jadranska avenija before it joins the E-59/E-65. Take tram 7 or 14 and get off at the big roundabout on the southern side of the Jadranski most bridge. Follow the signs for Karlovac which will take you on to Jadranska avenija.
or take bus 111/112/132/164/165/168 to Lucko, post office, on Puskariceva Ulica. Walk 1,5km north to odmoriste.

East, E70, Belgrad

Take tram 2, 3 or 13 and get off at Zitnjak (the terminus for routes 3 and 13). Wait for a lift on the southern side of Slavonska avenija.
or take bus 111/112/132/164/165/168 to Lucko, post office, on Puskariceva Ulica. Walk 1,5km north to odmoriste.

North, E59, Vienna

Try your luck on Ljubljanska avenija or Jadranska avenija for a lift to Vienna. Use a sign so you don't get picked up by traffic heading to Ljubljana, Rijeka or Split.

Northeast, E71, Budapest

Follow the directions for Slavonska avenija and use a sign marked Varazdin or Budapest for a lift towards Hungary.

Rijeka

East, West, E65, Zagreb, Split, Ljubljana

Take bus #2 to Ivana Cikovica Belog. Walk 1,5km west to odmoriste Vrata Jadrana

Denmark

København

South, E47, E55

* Take the local train to Ellebjerg station. Walk west to the other side of the crossroad and hitchhike from Folehaven.

North E47, E55

Take bus 1 to Vibenshus Runddel and try your luck on Lyngbyvej.

food

Lots of falafel/shawarma places.

Estonia

There are no highways in Estonia, so you can hitchhike everywhere. Getting a lift should be quite easy, except small roads

Tallinn

East, E20, St.Petersburg

Take on of the busses 12/54/55/100/102/104/ 106/129/134/139/143/150-155/ 283/286 to Pae. There hitch from the crossroad of Peterburi Tee and Pae.
Or take bus #286 to Pirita Jógi.Then walk to the crossroad of Peterburi tee and Lagedi Tee.

South, Pärnu, Riga E67

Take one of the busses #14/18/27/111/113/ 117/190 to Laagri stop. #14 and #18 go from the central post office.

Southeast, Tartu

Take bus #2 or #62 to Lindavikivi. Then walk to Taru mnt/Järvevana tee

public transport

no ticket control in trams.

Finland

Hitchhiking is not very usual in Finland, but there are some good places. It's illegal to hitchhike on highways. Most people speak English, you can also try German, Swedish (on the coast) or Russian (eastern parts).

Helsinki

North, Hämeenlinna, Tampere, E12

* Go to the end of Mannerheimintie and to the beginning of Hämeenlinnanväylä. (tram 10) Try the bus stop.

Or take bus to Vantaa (Myyrmäki, Martinlaakso) and try at some bus stop

* Or take a bus to Vantaa (Kivistö) and walk to the gas station (Keimolan portti) by the highway

* East, Northeast, E75, E18, Lahti, St Petersburg

Go to the crossroad of Valtimontie and Kustaa Vaasantie (tram 6) and try the bus stop
Or go to a wider place of the road after the bus stop. The place is after a motoway sign, but the police usually don't care.

West, E18, Turku

Both hitchhiking places to Turku are quite difficult.
Take a local train to Espoo and walk 2km to the motorway crossroad.

 Or go to the beginning of Turunväylä (trams 4, 10).

public transport

Possible to travel without ticket in metro and tram. Sometimes inspectors, fee 50e.

Tampere

South, Helsinki, Turku, E12, E63

* Go to the traffic circle in Viinikka and try there or walk by the road to agas station (~1km)

Oulu

For a long ride, go to Vähälä terminal at Äimärautio, south from the centrum.

South, E75

Walk about 3km Southeast to Kaukovainionkatu. There at #63 go northeast throuhg forest to the highway.

North, E75

Walk 1km along Kajaanintie to the highway

Turku

Northeast, Forssa, Riihimäki, Hämeenlinna (local number 10) (also Lahti)

A good place is about 4km from the centrum of Turku, on Hämeenlinnantie, at the crossroad of Nummi and Halinen. There is a bus stop there, and probably the correct bus is #4. Leave the bus at the Nummi library and walk 100m to the crossroads.
You can also go to Lahti this way. In that case, go via Riihimäki.

* Or walk 6km on Hämeenlinnantie past the motorway ramps of Porintie. On the hill there is a bus stop, which is probably the best place to hitch-hike out of Turku.

Lahti

North, East, Kuopio, Jyväskylä,Kouvola, E75, local 4 and 5

From the centrum of Lahti, walk 3km to a motorway ramp of road #4. Walk north on Aleksanterinkatu and Karjalankatu to a T-crossroad. walk 200m left (Kouvola direction) and by a small crossroad. Hitch-hike from the second crossroad on a ramp. The walk takes about 30min.
After Lahti there is a gib Motorest called Tähtihovi. Make sure you will get there, if your ride is going to Heinola. Otherwise you may have to walk through the whole city. There are a lot of cops around Heinola, too.
Or if you are going to Kuhmo or Kajaani (or anywhere at the road #5) you can also try the Hartwall factory. It's behind the T-crossroad (mentioned above). Around 1pm there are a lot of beer trucks going north.

South, Helsinki, E75, local #4

* Walk about 2km to a bus stop from the railway station. Next to the station under the railway there is a road called Vesijärventie that goes to Launee. Walk on it to south about 20min until you see a McDonald's and a K-rauta (hardware store). Next to K-rauta there is a bus stop, which is a good hithc-hiking place. you can also try to find a bus from Kauppatori that goes to that bus stop.

Southwest, Riihimäki, Häeenlinna, (Turku, Tampere)

Walk from the marketplace on a road that goes by the conservatory and by the bus station on al hill. This road is the old road to Helsinki (if you want experience the real country life :). From the top of the hill there goes a road down to right, it leads to Tampere. Walk along it about 5-10min, over the railroad and over a walking road. There is a traffic light next to a bus stop, where you can usually catch a ride to at least Hollola.
The road going to Riihimäaki goes left right after Hollola. This road takes you also to Turku.
Later there is a chance to take a turn to Hämeenlinna and Jämsä

Kuopio

South, Mikkeli, Lahti, Helsinki, local #5

Take a bus that is going to Jyväskylä from the bus station. Ask the driver for the first gas station on the motor way before the bus turns to Jyväskylä.
If you are going via Jyväskylä, one of the most beautiful hitch-hiking routes goes via Sysmä, Asikkala and Vääksy to Lahti. Very idyllic!

Southwest, Jyväskylä, E63

Take a bus that is going to Jyväskylä from the bus station. Ask the driver for a good gas station.

North, Iisalmi, Oulu, Kajaani, local #5

 This direction is very difficult. Behind the bus station on Maljalahdenkatu there is a motorway ramp where you can try (a long time).
You can also walk a few kilometers on Niiralankatu to a bus stop

Jyväskylä

Northeast,Kuopio, E63, South, Lahti, E75

Take a local bus from the bus station to Kanavuori, the crossroad to Kuopio. It takes about 15min.

South, Lahti, Tampere, E63

Walk 1-2km southg from the railway station to the beginning of the motorway. There aren't very good places and the road is under construction. (it's not impossible though).
If you are going to Lahti, turn to east at Jämsä traffic circle. To Tampere, go straight ahead to south.

Mikkeli

North, South, local #5

Walk a few kilometers north to Visulahti. Hitch-hike from the crossroad of the Visulahti camping area, there are bus stops at both sides of the road.

The french speak french, usually no english or german

Paris

There are no good places to hitchhike out of Paris, but you can always try.

North, E15 (Bruxelles, Britain)

Take the metro to Porte de la Chapelle Hitchhike on the Rue Marx Dormoy / Rue de la Chapelle before the ring.
Or take the metro to St Denis-Porte de Paris and try the entrance of the highway
Or go on the Peripherique to Porte de Bagnolet

Southeast, Lyon, E15

Take the metro to porte d'Italie, porte d'Orleans or the local train to Villabé.
Or hitch from Marché de Rungis in the southern suburbs

West, E50 (Reims)

Very difficult direction. Try somewhere near Porte de Bercy

It's possible not to pay for the metro. Jump over the gates or go in where others come out.

Parisiens eat meat. Vegetarian food always contains cheese. Etno food can be found at least at Montmartre

Germany

Germany's highways are full of trucks and big gas stations. German is the language to speak with truck drivers.

Hamburg

* Take a train to Wilhelmsburg station. Walk east through a suburb (about 1km) to a gas station (Stillhorn). Most truck drivers are heading to Hannover or Ruhr.

Northwest, E75

The N1 is the best route for lifts to northern Greece. Take the metro to Kifissia, then a bus to the N1 at Nea Kifissia.

Great Britain

London

hitchhiking places

On the roads and circles out of London you should carry a sign that tells which road you want (to avoid suburb traffic)

North, M1, E13 (Leicester)

Take the tube to Brent Cross then walk or take a bus to Brent Cross Shopping Centre and walk to Staples Corner. Staples Corner is a busy intersection where Edgware Road, the M1 and the North Circular Road connect. Look for the entrance to the M1 Motorway.

North, M11, Cambridge

Take the tube to Redbridge (on the Central line) and walk under the A406 overpass and stand near the on-ramp to both the M11 and the A406 (North Circular Road).

West

Take the tube to Chiswick Park and walk to the A4 (aka Great West Road aka Cedars Road). the entrance to the M4. Walk down Sutton Court Road and cross at the lights. Hitch from the southern side of M4.

Southwest, M3

Take a train from Waterloo to Sunbury and hitch from there.
Or hitch from the A316. Get a train to Whitton, walk to the A316 (Chertsey Road) and cross the footbridge to the southbound lane.

Southeast, France, M20

Catch a train from London Bridge Station to Mottingham in the south-eastern suburbs. At Mottingham, walk to the A20 (Sidcup Road).

Hungary

Budapest

West, Southwest E75, E60, E71, Vienna, Zagreb

Take tram 19 or 49 or the suburban train from Déli station to Kelenföld, then walk under the tracks and towards Hotel Wien to get the entrance of the M1.

Ireland

Dublin

Walk 4km north along O'Connell Street to Drumcondra Road and wait there.
Or take the airport bus and ask to be dropped off before the airport entrance.

South, Southwest, E20, E30

Walk along Thomas Street, past the Guinness Brewery, and try your luck on Emmet Road.

Italy

North, E35, Firenze

Take bus 319 from Stazione Termini to Piazza Vescovio and transfer to bus 135. Once you get to Via Salaria, find a good spot to pick up a north-bound lift.

South, E45, Napoli

Take the metro to Anagnina and wait on Via Tuscolana.

Latvia

Hitchhiking is fairly common-but carries the usual risks.

Riga

Hitch-hiking places

North, Tallinn

Tallinn-bound hitchhikers often start at the end of Brivibas, near the McDonald's.
Or, walk a few kilometres down the road from the terminus of tram N°6, which runs along Kr. Barona

South, Vilnus

To Vilnius, a good place to start is the Katlakalns turnoff on the main Vilnius road.
Or, For Vilnius, take bus N°26 from Abrenes to the turn-off for the town of Katlakalns (ask the driver for pagrieziens uz Katlakalnu).

Lithuania

It is possible to hitch-hike on all Lithuanian roads (motorways too).
Some drivers in Lithuania and in other East European countries may ask for money.

People in the Netherlands usually speak both english and german. English is recommended, because especially older people have some antipaties to the german.

Amsterdam

* Take a train to the Amstel station and walk past a traffic circle to the west, there is a gas station.

South (Leiden, Rotterdam)

Trams 16 & 24 to Stadionplein, walk to Haarlemmerweg.

Trams #1, #16 #24 are free.

food

Lots of pizza, falafel & asian food, not very cheap. Garbage is thrown on the streets on evenings, which helps freeganism

Utrecht

South, East

Take a bus to direction "Uithof" and leave at the football stadium. There is an official "liftplaats" at the entry of the highway.

Southwest, E18

Take bus 151, 161, 251, 252 or 261 to Oksenøyveien and try your luck at the bus stop.
OR take bus no. 31 or 32 to "Maritim". Try hitchhiking from the service station.
OR bus no. 151 or 252/261 to "Oksenøyveien" (just outside Lysaker, 15 min. from Oslo). Hitchhike from the bus stop.

West, E16, Bergen

If you're heading to Bergen, you should take bus 161 to the end of the line and hitch on the E16.
OR take bus no. 151 to Sandvika station. Hitchhike from there on E16 in the direction of Hønefoss. At Hønefoss you take left on Riksvei 7 to Hol in Hallingdal. From there you can either use Riksvei 50 to Aurland and E16 to Bergen, or Riksvei 7 to Granvin, Riksvei 13 to Voss and E16 to Berge

North, E6, Trondheim

Go to Grorudkrysset by bus no. 301 or 363
or take metro no. 5 to "Grorud"
or takebus no. 31, 32 to "Aker Sykehus".

South, E6, Göteborg

Take the suburban train to Nordstrand (on the Skien line) where you'll find the E6 highway
or take bus no. 81, 83, or 85 to "Bekkelaget"

South, to the Continent

Go to the harbour from where the ferries to Denmark/Germany leave (the Vippetangen/Hjortnes harbour). You might get a lift if you ask the drivers waiting in line to board the ferry. At Sjøsiden Café, you'll meet truck-drivers.

Poland

Highways are not very big, you can hitchhike almost anywhere (at least every one else does, dunno if it's illegal or not). Gas stations in every few kilometers. Speak polish (or try german). Don't go to Warszaw, go to Krakow.

Wroclaw

South, E40

Go to the main bus station (PKS) and ask for the free bus to Centrum Bielany - supermarket on the suburbs. It runs every 20 minute and without expences takes you to A4 highway on the south. From there you have a great hike-depart point.
