Information retrieval

The seminar will take up some research in information retrieval (IR). IR is the art and science of finding information, in documents, searching for documents themselves, searching for metadata which describe documents, or searching within databases.

Selected topics from Moffat, Zobel and Hawking: Recommended Reading for IR Research Students. Presented at SWIRL '04. Url: http://www.sigir.org/forum/2005D/2005d_sigirforum_moffat.pdf

Also suggestions by students are taken into account.

Prerequisites: The course Information Retrieval Methods (6 cp) or corresponding.

Teaching forms

The seminar will meet once a week to listen to and discuss presentations by the students about information retrieval research. The seminar language is English. Each student writes a ten-page summary/survey of his or her subject. The paper should be returned two weeks before the seminar in electronic format (pdf). Two other students will review the paper and the student makes a final version for the presentation. The final paper will be published on the seminar page. The student gives a presentation of the paper and four other students act as opponenst. All other students are expected to take part in the discussion.

Reviewers make comments on and corrections to draft papers.
