Ars Magica

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!

-Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Kubla Khan

Words of Power

Come to a land of adventure and mystery, of falling empires and rising nations, of legendary creatures and incredible myths. This is Ars Magica's Mythic Europe, where the power of magic is real and exists alongside historical figures and locations. Stories revolve around the covenant: one part mystical college, one part magical laboratory, one part Hermetic fortification, one part bastion of secrecy.

Ars Magica is by far my favorite role-playing game. It might have something to do with that I'm the Storyguide (DM or GM to you ADDers) of our Saga :-). This page serves as a collection point for information about our saga (the next section), as well as a store for all kinds of resources and links related to both Ars Magica and role-playing in general.

The resources below are marked with language flags. Information in Finnish is marked with a [Finnish], whereas information in English is marked with a [English]. Since our saga is played in Finnish, most of the saga information is in Finnish. The link section does not have any markings; all links point to English material.

Saga

Let me tell you...

We've started our second saga now. The players' covenant is built upon the ruins of their old covenant, which was destroyed in a Wizards' March. Suffice it to say, most of the characters in the previous covenant thought the Code of Hermes[English] was a bit boring. The new covenant is called Le Blanc, and has four elder NPC magi as leaders, which ought to cool things down a bit.

Note that this is not an email game - you cannot "listen in" to the game.

Game Status

Celebrant:
There is only Games and The Time Between Games.
Congregation:
Pray, let it be short.

The game was on hiatus while I was working in Japan. The notes[Finnish] of the game are still available. Now that I'm back, we are continuing the campaign.

Covenant Logs

I made some notes[Finnish] of the game sessions in the previous saga, detailing the history of the infamous covenant of Grapegrove. I've converted a fraction of them to something resembling a story[English].

Resources

Original

A Sorceress' Spell
House Rules[English]
Compiled here for player reference.
Combining Earthsea and Ars Magica[English]
A short essay I have written on the subject.
Mass Combat System[English]
In Ars Magica, it is not uncommon for players to command a significant amount of troops. I have devised a mass combat system for Ars Magica, which allows you to handle units as single fighters, so that ordinary combat rules can be used. Your turb size is not limited by your dice-rolling stamina any more.

Edited

Giant Pricelist[English]
Collected from a lot of different sources by Darin Lea. A smaller one[English] is also available. The smaller list is largely a (more) historically accurate subset of the big one, and it also gives the maker/seller of items.

Darin has used the smaller one as a resource for the large one, but some items were left out for various reasons. If you don't want any additions or changes, here's the completely unedited original version[English].

Music suitable for Ars Magica[English]
A game session can be enhanced by using suitable background music. Here is some advice on which music to choose.
Standard Grogs[English]
Why generate dragon fodder individually? This is a list of "standard" grogs generated using Philip Tollinton's excellent InstaGrog grog generator.
Small Collection of Story Ideas and Links[English]
A Storyguide is constantly on the search for new story ideas. The quest may become easier if one is willing to recycle stories and ideas from other people. If you are a player, and not a Storyguide, do NOT follow this link. You will only spoil you enjoyment of the game. Instead, ask your Storyguide to check it out.
Ghosts[English]
A short treatise on ghosts written by Geoffrey Grabowski
Books of Lore[English]
A list of historical and fictional books compiled by Erik Inge Bolsoe. Current version is 1.5.
Vocation Templates[English]
Almost 50 vocational templates by Daryl Poe
Covenant Charter[English] and Covenant Oath[English]
Perhaps some of the magi will remember them and correct their erring ways. The Oath is from the rulebook, and I found the original version of the charter on the Web (sorry, don't remember where anymore).
Rules on books and their usage[Finnish]
This compendium was written by Jarkko Kuisma
Some history[Finnish] on the Albigensian crusade
Important events in the nearby history and future, written by Jarkko Kuisma
