Books of Lore
This is an attempt to compile a list of book titles for
various Knowledges and Arts, to simplify SG's and player's work in
creating books for a Covenant's library. Contributions are very welcome,
mail to Erik Inge Bolsoe and cc
me. If you think
the score of a historical book should be higher or lower, tell so. I'm
no expert on books from the middle ages.
The original
plaintext document was compiled by Erik Inge Bolsoe. A Hungarian
translation has been provided by Ákos Tasnádi (Thaur). He also
lists some books of
his own, with extensive descriptions.
Index
Converting to 4th Edition
The statistics listed for each book are language, score and number of
volumes (if last is omitted, assume 1). The books are mostly listed in
the 3rd edition format, with a score only. Some of the newer ones have
4th edition scores listed in parenthesis. To convert to 4th edition,
assume all are Summae, and for quality, use either half the score
(minimum of 3), or roll a stress die:
| Roll | Quality
|
|---|
| Botch | 1 or Unreadable
|
| 0 | 2
|
| 2 | 3
|
| 3 - 4 | 4
|
| 4 - 5 | 5

| 6 - 8 | 6
|
| 9 - 10 | 7

| 16 - 18 | 10
|
| 19 - 21 | 11

Note: Where number of volumes isn't listed, assume one volume.

- New in this version: A historical book covering !!Magic Theory!!
(Mercurian, but anyway. Thanks to our spanish literature student)
v1.4 14-03-98 : 171 books (46 real, 125 fictious)
v1.5 16-07-98 : 191 books (47 real, 144 fictious)
- New in this version: AM3 rule snipped, several 'net covenants has had
their library raided and scanned for good-sounding books. Anyone
volunteering to help me out on converting the list to AM4?
Layout improved. HTML conversion ruled down (too much work for too
little gain).
Disclaimer: Some of these are books from real history, most are not.
In the cases I've borrowed fictional titles without informing the
author, I assure that this is a purely informational and non-profit
document, for the benefit of the Ars Magica listmembers at
csua.berkeley.edu.
Contributors
Key
Basic data format is Language, Score, Number of volumes, e.g.
"Latin, 3, 1 volume". There are additions where a book contains several
knowledges, or has 4th edition statistics. The additions are pretty
self-explanatory.
- I
- Version is detoriated after centuries of bad copies and
translations, original would be +1.
- X
- These aren't widely available until 1300-1400.
