582402 Electronic Commerce and Internet
During this course, we will examine the state of electronic commerce from a commercial and legal point of view, as well as from the aspect of implementing marketplaces.The course as part of the Master's degree
The course is an optional laudatur course. In future, we will try to offer a course or seminar in electronic commerce every year (annually).The number of exercise groups is restricted; some sixty students are accepted to the course. To be accepted to the course, you must have reached the laudatur stage in your studies, i.e. you must have completed the course in software engineering.
How to complete the course
The lecture course is compulsive for completing this course.The compulsive parts of the course are the following:
- weekly exercises, weeks 1-4 - with foreign students this will be replaced by some homework assignment
- the group exercise made in groups of 4-6 members, and the presentation of this project in the weeks 5-6, and
- the final exam and home essay
One of teams working on group exercises is English-speaking.

Time and places
The course lectures will be held on 19.9.- 2.11. 2000 on Tuesdays 10-12 and on Thursdays 12-14 in room A414. There will be some visiting lecturers, so there might be changes in the lecturing hours. Exam and home essay
The final exam will be held in Porthania I on Thursday 9.11. at 10.00-14.00
The exam questions will require essay answers on the subjects dealt with during the course. The essays will be expected to analyze factors influencing the creation of electronic commerce systems, technical problems arising from them, and basic methods of solution.
There will be questions from the list below.
- Legal requirements in electronic commerce
- Ensuring and keeping up customer loyalty to the net shop - factors of choosing clientele, products and systems.
- The basic solutions of Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Clients (B2C) systems, most notable differences and their causes.
- The threat to client privacy from enhancing direct Internet sales
- Support services for the shopper (lists, agents,...) at the market site
- Auction systems
- Internet as a marketing channel and model solutions of marketing on the Internet
- EDI
- Influence, possibilities and restrictions in society (society, clients, producers, merchants, markets) brought by electronic commerce
- Uses of XML and HTML, and the strengths and weaknesses of electronic commerce implementations
- Publishing XML documents on different types of screens
- Personalising services according to user
- Usability requirements for the market site's own search engine
The exam is based on the lectures, on the analogous parts of Turban's book (see "Time and places" for info on which chapters answer to which lectures) and on the execises and the material used in them.
There will be a home essay as part of the exam. The subject of the essay will be given from the list above, you will have three alternatives to choose from. The essay should be handed in two weeks after the exam.
