Instructions for Writing Essays for Courses "Collaboration of Autonomous
Business Services" ("Autonomisten järjestelmien yhteistyö") and "Middleware"
("Väliohjelmistot")
The "essay project" consists of two phases:
An essay plan, and
the actual essay
The essay plan has to be delivered before the actual essay, so that I can make
possibly some suggestions for guiding the essay writing process and its
contents.
The contents of the essay plan and formatting instructions for the actual
essay are given below.
Essay Plan Contents
The essay plan consists of 1) an abstract describing the planned contents of
your essay, 2) a preliminary table of contents, and 3) a list of the planned
/ most important references. You should deliver your essay plan already in
the final format (see below). The
essay plan is delivered by email (to
Toni Ruokolainen) in PDF or PS
(postscript) format.
Here is a selection of essay topics from the Middleware course held in 2006:

If your write your thesis in Word or OpenOffice, you
can utilize for example the Department's "pdfmail"-printer for creating the

For the essay formatting I recommend using Latex and the Departments
"official" Scientific Writing templates retrievable for example from
here.
