Abstract

Today the need for real-time services is rapidly growing in the telecommunications. Another important trend is the willingness to provided new services exploiting software solutions that are based on object-orientation. Therefore, the telecommunication solutions of tomorrow will need real-time object-oriented database management system (RT-OODBMS). An RT-OODBMS can be implemented on the top of a real-time platform if key features are supported in the platform. In this paper we discuss the platform support needed by a particular database architecture developed in our research projects. Several commercial real-time platforms have nice features but the situation is roughly the same as in ordinary database systems: general purpose (real-time) platforms can only provide rudimentary support. Several essential properties must be implemented in the database system.
