Yleistä

The lectures and exercises have ended, no lecture on 17.4. Home exam period 18.4 - 18.5.

Location-awareness refers to the capability of an entity (e.g., person, device or application) to be able to determine its location. With the profiliteration of location-enabled smartphones, location-awareness has become an important domain within research and  businesses. The course covers basic concepts and methods for position estimation, both in indoor and outdoor settings, algorithms for processing location data (e.g., detecting frequently visited locations and processing data from movements of humans), and the use of location in applications and services (i.e., different forms of location-based services).

Rough outline of the course:

  • Location and Location-Awareness
  • Location-Based Games and other Location-Based Services
  • Positioning Algorithms
  • Location Systems (Indoor and Outdoors)
  • Spatial Data Analysis
    • Preprocessing location measurements
    • Spatial clustering
    • Line simplification

Kurssin suorittaminen

The course involves a home exam and weekly exercise sessions. Successful completion requires achieving at least half of the points in both the exam and the exercises.

At the end of the course, interested participants can undertake a separate project work for additional credits.
