Haastateltavana Helsingin yliopiston tietojenkäsittelytieteen laitoksen professori Hannu Toivonen, jonka erikoisala on luova laskenta.

Tästä päästään ongelmaan inhimillisen ja algoritmiin perustuvan mieltymyksen eroista: yksi vaikeasti mallinnettava piirre on Toivosen mukaan yllätyksellisyys, koska yllätyksen mielenkiintoisuutta on vaikea ennustaa.

Watch this AI rap generator spit algorithmic bars

If you've always dreamed of being a rapper but were stuck for inspiration, you're in luck -- a team of computer scientists have created an artificially intelligent rap lyric generator -- and now you can try it yourself. As previously covered in print by WIRED, DeepBeat was originally a tool used in research by a team from the universities of Helsinki and Aalto. Now for the first time it has been made available to the public.

The Wired magazine lists in its September 2015 issue Helsinki's 10 hottest startups. Among them is Beddit, a company whose unique sleep analysis software was developed in the PhD work of Joonas Paalasmaa in the Discovery research group.

"Sleep is the foundation of health and wellness," explains Lasse Leppäkorpi, 35, founder and CEO of sleep-monitor firm Beddit. Combining an app with a sensor strip that lies beneath the bed sheet, it uses ballistocardiography to monitor your movement. After two US partnerships failed in 2006 and 2012, the firm now has $3m (£2m) to fund expansion.

This Rapper’s a Machine

But now even Q-Tip’s mind may have more sophisticated competition. A group of researchers at a university in Finland say they’ve programmed a computer that can out-rap the best of them. In their paper called “‘DopeLearning’-A Computational Approach to Rap Lyrics Generation,” released this week, researchers from Finland’s Aalto University said their program could create new rap lyrics by combining lines from existing songs and even pack them with more rhymes per sentence than almost any rapper alive. Their secret weapon: DeepBeat, software code that utilizes a data set of over half a million lines of lyrics from 104 different artists that rap in English; in total, 583, 669 lines from 10, 980 songs.

Machine-Learning Algorithm Mines Rap Lyrics, Then Writes Its Own

The highly structured nature of rap makes it particularly amenable to computer analysis. And that raises an interesting question: if computers can analyze rap lyrics, can they also generate them? Tekoälyn läpimurto potaskaa

Tarkemmin sanottuna Eugene-niminen tietokoneohjelma kykeni vakuuttamaan kolmasosan brittiläisestä testiryhmästä olevansa 13-vuotias ukrainalainen poika. The academic who wants to autocorrect our sense of humour

It was obvious what Hannu Toivonen meant— but it was still embarassing. “I was signing off my e-mail,” he said. “It was meant to say ‘Best Regards’. What it actually read was, ‘Best Retards’.”
Autocorrect had struck again. Most people would have sent an apology, hoped no offence was taken and put it downto the curse of sendinge-mails on the move. Professor Toivonen, however, is a computer scientist. So he instead conducted a study into the unintentional humour of the erroneous predictive text—with the goal of teaching computers to be funnier.

Scientists are trying to harness the unintentional humour of autocorrect mistakes by teaching computers to be funny, it was revealed today. The researchers in Finland and France took thousands of real text messages and tried to change them slightly like an autocorrect would - before asking people online to rate the humour. University of Helsinki professor Hannu Toivonen and his colleagues found taboo words increase the chance of texts becoming funny - as well as those where they are normal until the very end.

Find Out What Your Dreams Sound Like

Have your ever wondered what your dreams would sound like if they were set to music?
Well, Hannu Toivonen has, so he went ahead and developed software that automatically composes synthetic music using data culled from a person's sleep and dream statistics. Toivonen, a professor of computer science at the University of Helsinki, worked together with Aurora Tulilaulu, a student who composed the program.
"The software composes a unique piece based on the stages of sleep, movement, heart rate and breathing. It compresses a night’s sleep into a couple of minutes," Tulilaulu described.

Apparently, this dream plans to dog me no matter how far away from college I get. I've had it so many times it deserves its own soundtrack. And now, it turns out, it can get one.
Computer scientists from Finland's University of Helsinki have developed software that makes music out of sleep patterns.

5 Questions to… Hannu Toivonen

The power of bioinformatics can never be valued enough in biological sciences. It can help to uncover previously hidden connections between genes and proteins or give data a very personal, musical note.
Hannu Toivonen is a computer scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland. One of his main goals is to use large networks such as biological or social networks to identify useful and non-obvious information. He was, for example, involved with the creation of Biomine, a repository that allows predictions of unknown relationships between certain genes or proteins (BMC Bioinformatics, 13:119). But Hannu is also interested in computer creativity. For this, he uses his data mining approach to identify information networks that could be applied in creative tasks. And some interesting results in this area have already been produced, namely a comic art book with computer-generated poems: Heikki Paakkanen: Tee se kotona. Kiitos. (Do it at home. Thank you) Only available in Finnish.
