Teaching

The basic degrees of the educational programme of computer science are the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees. The major subject in both degrees is computer science. The BSc degree forms a solid basic education in computer science, on which the MSc degree can build through three specialisation areas. At the Master’s level, the teaching branches into three sub-programmes, Algorithms and machine learning, Distributed systems and data communications, and Software systems. The department also coordinates the Master’s programme in Bioinformatics given in English.

The department has a long-term investment in improving and developing teaching at the department. For the three-year period that ended in 2009, the department was one of 20 national centres of excellence in higher education in Finland. It also gained the same status for the next three-year period (2010-2012); this time it was only awarded to 10 units in the country on the basis of a multi-stage international assessment.

The Department of Computer Science is using Legos as a way to learn and teach coding.
